The role in a nutshell:
The Junior Legal Officer will draft and review contracts, provide legal advice, ensure compliance with legal requirements, maintain legal documents, and support IT-related legal matters including cyber law and data privacy. The role will also support ISO compliance processes, group-level compliance initiatives, and governance activities.
What you will do in this role:
Traditional Legal
- Draft, review, and provide legal input on MOUs, contracts, NDAs, and other legal instruments under the supervision of senior legal staff.
- Support execution of deeds and notarizations where required.
- Assist in maintaining a central repository of all corporate and legal documents, ensuring timely updates and statutory submissions.
- Provide and interpret legal information to staff, creating awareness of relevant legal requirements and legislative changes.
- Assist the finance team with documentation and coordination for debt recovery and liaise with external legal service providers when required.
- Monitor litigation progress and coordinate with external lawyers
Compliance & Governance
- Assist in drafting policies, procedures, compliance mechanisms, and governance-related documentation.
- Support preparation of legal compliance checklists and ensure required information and documents are obtained and maintained.
- Monitor compliance with statutory obligations in all operating countries and escalate issues to the Senior Legal Officer.
- Maintain and update the Legal Register in coordination with senior legal staff.
- Support documentation, monitoring, and reporting for ISO 9001:2015 compliance and other relevant ISO standards.
- Assist in group-level compliance and governance initiatives, including reporting and maintaining governance records.
IT, Cyber, and Data Privacy
- Assist in reviewing and providing legal support for IT-related proposals, RFPs, RFQs, and tender documentation.
- Provide support on legal matters related to cyber law, data protection, and IT legislation, under the guidance of senior legal staff.
- Help ensure internal processes and documents comply with applicable data privacy and cybersecurity requirements.
HR & Employee Legal
- Support HR by reviewing employment contracts, NDAs, and employee-related agreements.
- Assist in ensuring HR policies and procedures comply with labour law and statutory requirements.
- Provide preliminary legal input on disciplinary matters and escalate complex issues to the Senior Legal Officer.
Coordination & Support
- Coordinate with internal teams (Sales, Finance, HR, IT, and others) to support day-to-day legal and compliance requirements.
- Liaise with external lawyers, auditors, and regulatory authorities under the direction of senior legal staff.
- Provide administrative and research support for legal, compliance, and governance projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned by superiors.
Qualifications & Experience:
- LL. B degree from a recognized university.
- License to practice as Notary Public in Colombo judicial zone is an advantage.
- Additional certification or coursework in cyber law, data privacy, IT law, compliance, or governance is preferred.
Skills Expected
- Attorney-at-Law with 1–2 years’ experience in contract drafting/reviewing.
- Enthusiastic to join the corporate sector.
- Knowledge of data protection laws, cyber law, IT legislation, and experience handling IT-related legal documents is an added advantage.
- Familiarity with ISO compliance processes, group compliance frameworks, and corporate governance practices will be considered a strong asset.
